Pottery Wheel for Beginners

Your hands on a spinning wheel, a lump of clay, and one piece that survives the kiln.

Pottery

1 / 4

Throwing on a wheel is harder than it looks and simpler than it sounds. You will spend the first half hour learning to centre the clay, then shape whatever the clay will let you.

How the session runs

  • Wedging and centring, the part everything else depends on
  • Opening and pulling up the walls
  • Shaping a bowl or a cup
  • Choosing a glaze before you leave

Good to know

Aprons, clay, and tools are provided. Firing and glazing are included, and the studio explains collection or shipping at the end of the class.

For participants

Wear clothes you do not mind marking and bring a towel, as clay gets everywhere. Keep your nails short, since long nails make centring much harder. No experience is needed. Pieces are fired after the class and are usually ready for collection a few weeks later.
