Stargazing on the Outskirts
A dark site, a telescope, and the names of what you are looking at.
Nature
1 / 4
Most people have never seen a genuinely dark sky. This session takes you far enough out that the Milky Way becomes obvious, and puts a telescope on whatever is best that night.
What you will see
- An orientation tour of the main constellations, by eye
- The moon or a bright planet through a telescope
- A deep-sky object chosen for the season
- A few minutes with binoculars, learning what to look for
Good to know
The site is chosen for darkness, so the drive is part of the experience. If cloud cover is heavy the host moves the session to another night.

For participants
Dress more warmly than the daytime temperature suggests, as the site is exposed and you will be standing still. Bring a red torch if you have one, and avoid white light once observing starts. The session runs late, and there is a short walk from parking on uneven ground.
